Southpark and Southcrest Area Drainage and Paving Improvements
City of Houston – Houston, Texas
The area of Southpark and Southcrest is comprised of approximately 859 acres consisting of subdivisions that were constructed in the 1950s. This area experiences significant flooding due to its aging stormwater infrastructure, topography, and inability for positive overland sheet flow. This project consisted of design and construction of storm drainage improvements including necessary concrete paving, curbs, sidewalks, driveways and underground utilities to serve the area on more than seven separate streets. Improvements included removal and replacement of the existing storm sewer drainage system with a new, upsized system to alleviate local flooding within the neighborhood. The project also included the design of box culverts and reinforced concrete pipes designed to accommodate the two-year storm event. Street replacement was designed to accommodate the 100-year event. The scope of this project also included full pavement replacement and replacement of old waterlines ranging in size from 6-inches to 12-inches. Special consideration was given to traffic control plans and construction phasing to minimize disruption to neighborhood traffic. Tree protection, driveway replacement, and resident access were key considerations during design and construction. Technical analysis was performed utilizing XP-SWMM 2D modeling.
